Who is John Henson?

Words. HShoop

More than any other player this spring, John Henson has made an astronomical leap from being a virtually unheard of power forward to the top ranked at his position in the whole nation. He’s done it on the AAU circuit of Round Rock, Texas, where he’s drawn comparisons to Chris Bosh.

At 6-10 210 lbs., Henson has the background of a guard and his ballhandling and jumpshooting skills prove that. At the Cactus Classic in Tucson, Arizona, Henson pulled up from the three-point line in transition to knock down open triples smoothly. But his skills are best suited in the paint, where he’s got amazing defensive instincts.

After starting his high school career as a guard, Henson is now becoming more comfortable in the paint, and aggressively dunking the basketball when he’s within reach. He’s made considerable strides in the paint since he collected 21.5 points and 10.7 rebounds per game this season at Round Rock HS. His steady climb up the rankings from the Top 25 and now into the Top 10 must make Roy Williams happy, as he’s gone from having a top-notch recruit to an elite commit waiting in the wings.

The lefty big man has shown more versatility than Brandan Wright did at this stage in his career and could very well be one of the toughest matchups in the Class of ‘09 right behind PG John Wall, SF Lance Stephenson, SG Kenny Boynton and PF Renardo Sidney.
