Breaking News: Duke Recruit May Have Way to Get to Durham Early

Last week we asked Atlantic Shores Christian (Va.) guard Andre Dawkins if he wished he could come to Duke early, given the Blue Devils’ thin backcourt situation – just two scholarship guards (Nolan Smith and Jon Scheyer) after losing Gerald Henderson to the NBA Draft and Elliot Williams to transfer.

“You know that would be a great opportunity to play right away,” said Dawkins, a 6-5 scoring guard who is rated the No. 21 prospect in the HighSchoolHoop top 50. “But things happen for a reason. I think we’ll be fine regardless.”

Wednesday, Dawkins’ father, Andre Sr., told the Daily Press that the seemingly far-fetched scenario could be an option because Dawkins has completed his core academic requirements and is close to graduating from Atlantic Shores.

From DailyPress.com:

“Whether or not he heads to Duke next month, Dawkins’ Atlantic Shores career appears over. He has applied for admission to Hargrave Military Academy, a prep school in Chatham whose alumni include first-round NBA draft choices David West and Josh Howard.
“We wanted to challenge him a little bit athletically,” Dawkins’ father said.
The Dawkins family moved to Chesapeake from Washington, D.C., in the summer of 2005, and as a ninth-grader that fall Andre attended Deep Creek High, where he played on the junior varsity.
He transferred to Atlantic Shores the following year and reclassified, for basketball purposes, as a ninth-grader.”

Phone calls to Dawkins were not immediately returned, but his BWSL AAU coach Boo Williams told HSH that, while Dawkins may have the option to attend Duke in the fall, “nothing is definite.”

“I haven’t talked to his father about all of it, but he’s eligible,” Williams told us. “It’s not definite. There’s no doubt in my mind that he’s ready to play. I haven’t talked to anyone on Duke’s staff about this, so I don’t know what their take on it is. Nobody knows for sure what the deal is, but he’s got the option. I think he wants to leave all of his options open.”
