USC With Surprise Point Guard Commitment
Words. Aron Phillips

After USC basketball signees were jumping ship following Tim Floyd’s resignation, it appears they’ve rebounded well. While some people thought that senior Maurice Jones from Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw, Michigan was only a mid-major D-1 prospect, the 5-7 point guard just verbally committed to play for the Trojans after a weekend visit.
“Everything fell into place,” said Arthur Hill basketball coach Greg McMath. “He wanted a place with strong academics, and so did his mom (Jill Jones).
“Basktball-wise, he wanted to go to a conference where smaller guards have had success, and the Pac-10 has had that. They tend to get up and down the court more than other conferences.”
While a little undersized, Jones has great court vision and is a very capable scorer, averaging 27 points and 13 assists per game last season - just like his former high school teammate Dar Tucker. With excellent speed and court awareness, Jones should tear through guards in the Pac-10 like Damon Stoudamire, Aaron Brooks and Nate Robinson used to.
Good move for new head coach Kevin O’Neil.
