TaShawn Mabry

Rocky Mount High (N.C.) star TaShawn Mabry decided to hold off on making a commitment, and as a result, he’s reaping the benefits of being one of the best available senior options on the wing after the dust that is the early signing period has settled.

“(Duke assistant) Nate James called when I was at lunch,” Mabry, the 45th-rated prospect in the HSH top 50, said earlier this week. “He said they really want a wing and they want to come and evaluate me again. Then they want me to come to the game Saturday to meet Coach K. They’ve been watching me for a while.”

North Carolina State turned up the heat on Mabry, a 6-6 small forward, just before the early signing period when they hosted him for an official visit, but with no scholarships to offer, the Wolkpack’s hands were tied.

“I’m still considering them,” said Mabry of N.C. State. Miami, Florida, Virginia Tech, Clemson and Xavier round out his list.

So far this season, Mabry is averaging 26 points, seven rebounds, five blocks and six assists for the Gryphons.

“Duke was the first school to notice me back in the eighth grade,” said Mabry. “I remember that.”

Mabry Scouting Report
One of the most skilled players in the 2010 class, Mabry hurts you in a variety of different ways: Passing, from the perimeter, in the paint or off the dribble. Mabry also has some of the best timing when it comes to shot blocking that we’ve seen, making people think twice before coming into the lane despite being just 6-6. If his motor can remain constant when he’s playing, it’s scary how good Mabry can be.
