The Harrison Barnes Diary: Official visit to Duke

Words. Harrison Barnes

As he navigates through the hectic recruiting process, HighSchoolHoop’s top-rated player, Ames High (IA) swingman Harrison Barnes has agreed to chronicle his thoughts for us during each of his five official visits. First was North Carolina, then Oklahoma, followed by Kansas. Now Barnes shares his experiences from his official visit to Duke last weekend …

My flight got into Raleigh/Durham at 11:45 p.m. on Thursday. I had Coach Wojo (Steve Wojciechowski), Coach (Nate) James and Coach (Chris) Carawell waiting to pick me up. MORE >

Kyrie Irving: “I’m leaning toward Duke”

Words. dimemag

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that St. Patrick’s High (N.J.) point guard (and Bounce Magazine cover guy) Kyrie Irving told us last night that he was “leaning toward Duke.”

Remember we reported a while ago that Irving, who is rated the No. 6 prospect in the High School Hoop Top-50, would commit to Duke either during his official visit to Durham, which happened this past weekend, or shortly thereafter. It appears he’s going with the latter.

We caught up with Irving last night and asked him the tough, straightforward questions about his big visit, which included a matchup against former Duke great Jason Williams. MORE >

Words. Jason Jordan

Andre Dawkins knows what we’re going to say, so when he picks the phone up to talk with HighSchoolHoop he’s waiting for us to ask him if he remembers.

“I do,” he says. “I was smiling when you asked me that last time.”

A week before we reported about Dawkins heading to Duke a year early, we chatted with Dawkins on a variety of different topics. MORE >

Montrose Christian’s Josh Hairston wishes he could join Dawkins early

Gonzaga College High’s (Washington, D.C.) Tyler Thornton wouldn’t mind being in Andre Dawkins’ shoes, but he’s content with “winning another championship and getting better” during his senior year.

Montrose Christian’s (Md.) Joshua Hairston is more concerned that Dawkins will treat Hairston and Thornton “like little kids once we get to Duke now that he’s gonna have a year at Duke under his belt.” MORE >

Breaking News: Duke Recruit May Have Way to Get to Durham Early

Words. Jason Jordan

Last week we asked Atlantic Shores Christian (Va.) guard Andre Dawkins if he wished he could come to Duke early, given the Blue Devils’ thin backcourt situation – just two scholarship guards (Nolan Smith and Jon Scheyer) after losing Gerald Henderson to the NBA Draft and Elliot Williams to transfer.

“You know that would be a great opportunity to play right away,” said Dawkins, a 6-5 scoring guard who is rated the No. 21 prospect in the HighSchoolHoop top 50. “But things happen for a reason. I think we’ll be fine regardless.”

Wednesday, Dawkins’ father, Andre Sr., told the Daily Press that the seemingly far-fetched scenario could be an option MORE >
