Elite 24: What’s the best way to get a playground nickname?

Words. Jason Jordan

Bishop O’Connell High (Va.) point guard Kendall Marshall has played in some of the most hostile environments that the prep basketball scene has to offer.

He’s been called names, threatened, yelled at and even had things thrown at him. Add in the fact that Marshall, a rising senior, is already committed to North Carolina and the scrutiny only intensifies.

“People have their own ideas about how a ‘North Carolina recruit’ should be playing,” says Marshall. Still, without having ever played there before, Marshall is quick to point out that “playing at Rucker Park won’t be like anything that I’ve ever experienced.” MORE >

Florida Could Nab Lance Stephenson

Words. Andrew Katz

What originally seemed like a kick in the shins for Billy Donovan and the Florida Gators could end up as a blessing. But there’s a chance that it ends up working out pretty well for UF. Calathes’ departure opens up a scholarship, which could be filled by the only remaining five-star prospect on the board, Lincoln’s Lance Stephenson. MORE >

Star Recruits Give John Wall the Hard Sell

Words. dimemag

From North Carolina coach Roy Williams‘ phone call from the Final Four to John Calipari ditching Memphis for Kentucky to Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski putting on the full-court press, the recruitment of Word of God Academy (Raleigh, N.C.) point guard John Wall has been a true made-for-TV-drama.

But as talented as these head coaches are at selling their schools, often times it’s the recruits and signees that have the biggest impact on a player’s decision. We caught up with recruits from each of the schools that are perceived favorites for Wall’s signature and had them give their best sales pitch to land Wall… MORE >

How Star Players Deal with Air Balls

Words. Jason Jordan

When it comes to air balls it’s all about dispelling the embarrassment.

Kenny Boynton is beyond embarrassed.

Not even the roaring waves ramming the Pompano Beach, Fla., coastline can drown out the seemingly deafening chirps of the imaginary crickets inside of the Ely High gym. His eyes frantically shift from left to right like windshield wipers in a monsoon. Boynton, a senior combo guard who is signed with Florida, quickly debates if anyone noticed that he not only missed the shot, but, even worse, the rim.
