Tyler Lewis could be N.C.’s next big thing

Words. Jason Jordan

From slight giggles to downright disrespectful verbal jabs, Forsyth Country Day (Lewisville, N.C.) point guard Tyler Lewis has experienced it all.

The opposing team takes one look at the 5-10, 155-pound water boy look-alike walking onto the court, and they shoot him a quizzical squint as if to say “Wow! YOU start?”

“I get that a lot,” said Lewis, who is averaging 22 points, 8.5 assists, four rebounds and two steals a game. “Just even walking into the gym no one thinks that I’m gonna be an impact player, but I usually change that perception real quick.” MORE >

The Harrison Barnes Diary: Official visit to UNC

Words. Harrison Barnes

As he navigates through the hectic recruiting process, HighSchoolHoop.com’s top-rated player, Ames High (IA) swingman Harrison Barnes, has agreed to chronicle his thoughts for us during each of his five official visits. First up is North Carolina, who Barnes visited on Sept. 3…

I arrived at the Carolina Inn at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 3. Outside was Coach (Roy) Williams waiting for me and my family to take us to our rooms. The rooms were really nice.

Well, the first night I had to stay with my family because I think that’s just the policy, but the next night I got my own room. I got a queen bed to myself. I enjoyed that. MORE >

Getting Up With UNC’s Next Star Point Guard

Words. Jason Jordan

Kendall Marshall doesn’t care where he’s ranked; he’s focused on the bigger picture.

By the time Kendall Marshall was nine years old he could whip a behind-the-back pass through the arms of a lurking defender as easy as he could drain an NBA 3-pointer.

By the time he was 10, the 5-2, 95-lb. fifth grader was anointed the nation’s top fifth grader by HoopScoop, and by 11 he was featured on the front page of the Washington Post.

But by the time you read this article, none of that will matter. MORE >

C.J. Leslie Dishes on Real Reason Why He Backed Out on N.C. State

Words. Jason Jordan

Super recruit who backed out of his N.C. State commitment now has his eye on UNC, Florida and Kentucky.

You’d be hard pressed to find another player with the freakish hops and never-ending motor of Word of God Academy (N.C.) forward C.J. Leslie. Whether it’s pinning an opposing player’s shot to the backboard or throwing down a tomahawk jam in heavy traffic, Leslie, rated the No. 12 prospect on the HighSchoolHoop Top 50, never wants for “oohs” from the crowd. But as much as Leslie loves the attention he gets for his amazing athletic abilities, he cringes at the notion that people only remember his high-wire act.

“I hate that,” says Leslie. “There is so much more to my game that just stuff.” MORE >

Star Recruits Give John Wall the Hard Sell

Words. dimemag

From North Carolina coach Roy Williams‘ phone call from the Final Four to John Calipari ditching Memphis for Kentucky to Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski putting on the full-court press, the recruitment of Word of God Academy (Raleigh, N.C.) point guard John Wall has been a true made-for-TV-drama.

But as talented as these head coaches are at selling their schools, often times it’s the recruits and signees that have the biggest impact on a player’s decision. We caught up with recruits from each of the schools that are perceived favorites for Wall’s signature and had them give their best sales pitch to land Wall… MORE >
